National Youth Environment Forum...

I attended a forum organized by ECO and SMU today. And the name of the forum is called National Youth Environment Forum (NYEF). It is basically a platform where youths between the age of 17-25 can voice their opinions and solutions on our current environmental situation.

There were altogether 4 of us from GV who turned up for the forum; Kum Fai, Thomas, Yu En, and myself. All in all...the forum was really very informative and it showed me that there are other people out there who are equally if not more passionate about the environment. For example, when we were separated into our different caucus groups to discuss on our topic (Biodiversity and Nature Conservation), I felt that what I've spoken out was outspoken by other members in the group. So much so that I didn't know how to voice out my opinions because it would seem so inferior to what they've just said.

The caucus group discussion was actually in the afternoon, after lunch. Before that, in the morning, people from various organizations like the Vegetarian Society, the World Toilet Organization, and also some individuals like an Ang Moh NUS professor, and a research officer, conducted speech/educational talks on the 5 topics that were discussed today. And they are Energy & Climate Change, Sanitation & Water, Biodiversity & Conservation, Pollution & Ecosystem Management and Poverty & Population.

The speakers were all great except for the on from the Vegetarian Society because even though I do agree that we need to do something to help countries which are experiencing, poverty, I certainly DO NOT agree that we should do so by going vegetarian. I mean, take for example Australia's sheeps. Their sheeps are really really overpopulated. So what are we going to do? We shall all not eat them or waste the food we feed them because the food we feed them can be put to better use, like feeding the starved people in Africa. Come on!!! Then who's going to bloody eat the sheeps? You also say its animal cruelty to "brutally slaughter" an animal, BUT think! If nobody is going to eat the bloody sheeps, then are we just going to let them multiply until they die out?

Unfortunately, the highlight of the whole event was when the Ang Moh professor from NUS had fits or seizure. This happened during the presentation of the caucus groups. This was what happened...
While a presenter from a caucus group was presenting, there came a croaking, groaning, moaning noise. Which got louder and louder until it stopped. Everything just paused. It sounded so creepy, like the sound of a zombie or something. We all wondered where and what it was. And then, we all saw a movement at the centre of the lecture hall. And it turned out that the professor was having fits. Then, suddenly people just started crowding around him and some shouted to put something into his mouth, a pen or what not. Somebody stuffed a whole tissue packet into his mouth. I couldn't really see what was going on, but I could tell that he was jerking. Then, the chairman of ECO told us to leave the lecture hall while they got the situation under control. I didn't know whether they called an ambulance, because when we came back in a while later, he was gone.

Man! What an event!! The very first forum organized, and this was what had happened. It really has been a memorable day for ALL of us.
