I went with Kelyn and Shuyu aka Jojo. Jojo came later, so we sat first and "chopped" a seat for her. But there was this auntie and her grandchild, I think, seating beside me and Kelyn, who decided to make use of the extra seat beside us to sit there and place her bags on her former seat. Kelyn wanted to wait until Jojo came and then tell the auntie to move. But I wanted to be firm and tell her straight off. When I did, the auntie didn't seem too pleased. She said later then she'll move. So I just let it go. But when Jojo finally arrived, the auntie still didn't want to move. And she had the nerve to say that she was saving the seat for her friend who was yet to come. Yeah right! Bullshit!! But in the end, she and her granddaughter moved. Luckily, or we'd have caused a scene.
Anyway, the NDP was ok. I think I would've enjoyed it more if I was sitting further back, so that I can see the formations made by the dancers. While there was still light, singers and performers performed remixes of the traditional songs like Chan Mali Chan and Singapura. Revolutionalising the sounds is great, but I actually prefer it if they'd just stick to the traditional sounds. I mean they changed it until I didn't enjoy the songs. And I think if you're going to change the songs to that extent, the younger generation wouldn't even know how the traditional songs are meant to sound.
Since it was held at the bay, our defence force finally managed to show off their offshore defense team. There were soldiers jumping off a big helicopter(sorry, I don't know the name for it) and into the waters. There were also coast guards speeding across the bay. There were others, which were pretty interesting to see, since it hasn't been shown on NDP before.
And since it was only a preview, it lacked the VIPs, like some of the singers, the ministers and the president. It was really funny because there was a singer who wasn't there, who was instead replaced by a woman carrying a placard with the name "ASHA" on it. We were all laughing about it. The ministers were all represented by one man who also carried a placard. The best part was the "president". Mr Nathan was a young Indian man. Came in a Mercedes and even waved at the crowds when he stood in the car that brought him around the crowd. I expected nobody, to be the president, like in Primary 5. Everybody had a good laugh. (Still smiles at the memory)
I was actually looking forward to singing the National Anthem and saying the pledge. It's been a long time. And I think I would have let myself get emotional if Kelyn wasn't distracting me. Man, singing the National Anthem and saying the pledge can really move someone when they're done in a mass crowd who're celebrating the country's birthday(albeit only a preview).
The best part of the parade is, and will forever be the fireworks. You can only enjoy fireworks when you're there in person. And boy did I enjoy myself! There were some fireworks which I've never seen before. They were super!! There was a building nearby(I don't know the name) which shot out fireworks too...it was pretty cool.
Overall, the preview was ok la. It's just a preview, you can't expect too much. But still, the fireworks made up for the parts which lacked the wow! factor =D
Here's some pictures taken:
